It’s Friday, the last day of the week, as students sit in Cat Tracks while and scroll through their RTI Scheduler to select their choices for the following week. Because some students focus on schoolwork, clubs never come to their mind. However, clubs can be a fun way for students to make friends and learn about interesting topics that are outside of the normal curriculum.
For students who want a relaxing break from schoolwork and like to play games, the chess club welcomes any student looking for a challenge. Hosted by Kathleen Scharchburg and Milijana Suskavcevic, the Chess Club meets Wednesdays during Cat Tracks in Room D134. All students are welcomed if they want to learn or if interested in improvement
“We attend Houston Chess Association tournaments throughout the year and have been very successful at the tournaments we have entered and placed high on the podium as a team and individuals,” Club Host Scharchburg said. “Many students come regularly so come whenever you can!”
If hanging out after school and traveling around sounds interesting, Latin Club meets every other Monday in E123 Marshal Munson’s room. In it, students socialize while talking about ancient Roman language and culture, and sometimes even travel around to different conventions.
“You get to travel across the state and country in various conventions,” Marshal Munson, sponsor said. “We’re going to the Latin State convention at Bellaire High School this April and then in summer we’re going to the Latin National Convention in Oxford.”
For people more interested in community and history, the Black Student Association, BSA, focuses on celebrating and lifting the Black community. They organize fun events focused on building community and are planning activities such as donating to homeless shelters, volunteering at senior citizen’s homes, and toy drives. All students passionate about social justice and Black history are encouraged to attend meetings, which are hosted once a month at the beginning of the month during cat tracks and can be found in the RTI scheduler under the Aux cafeteria as “BSA meeting.”
“Being able to help the community is a beautiful thing in our eyes,” BSA President Raelynn Reese (10) said. “A lot of members have came up with amazing ideas for fun activities.”
A list of all other clubs is available under the “Creek Corner” Canvas page, by clicking on “Clubs & Organizations.”
