Pre-AP Chemistry

Prep Workshop

Math Concepts and Skills

Pre-AP Chemistry is a challenging course designed to prepare students to be successful in

  • AP Chemistry,
  • entry-level college chemistry courses,
  • elective courses where a strong chemistry foundation is advantageous, and
  • career options where a strong foundation in chemistry is required.

The chemistry course is built on a strong foundation of math, including some math concepts not encountered by students until Algebra II.  To ensure the success of students that will not be enrolled next year in Geometry or Algebra II, several options for academic support are available.  Students that will be enrolled in Algebra II are also encouraged to participate.

These options include:

  • Attending a free, 1 ½-day workshop this summer. This intensive workshop will provide instruction and practice in the math skills needed to be successful in Chemistry.  It will be held twice for student convenience:

  • June 6 and 7, 2018 OR     August 1 and 2, 2018 at:

  • Clear Falls High School
  • 4380 Village Way
  • League City TX 77573

The workshops will run from 8:30 – 2:00 on the first day, with a 30 minute lunch break from 11:30 – 12:00.  Students should bring a lunch or make alternate plans; no food is available on the campus.   The second day will run from 8:30 – 12:00.

The August dates may conflict with football, volleyball, and band practices/camps.

  • Completing the Pre AP Chemistry Prep packet. The packet covers the same materials and includes some online instruction and interactive activities.  The packet will be available online at the CCISD websit

The Pre AP Chemistry Prep Workshop/Packet will cover the following concepts:

  • Familiarity with scientific notation. Students should be able to perform math operations and solve equations using scientific notation (i.e. exponential notation).
  • Familiarity with significant figures.
  • Manipulation of formulas to solve for variables. Students should be able to, with ease, manipulate formulas to solve for any variable within an equation.  This Algebra I concept is further developed in Algebra II.  Students should have mastered this skill.
  • Mastery of the use of scientific calculators for entering and solving equations.
  • Familiarity with logarithms. Students should have a working definition of logarithms and be able to solve logarithmic equations.

Questions about Pre-AP Chemistry or the math pre-requisite skills can be directed to Lisa Wooley, CCISD Secondary Science Coordinator, at 281-284-0089 or by e-mail at [email protected].
