History is one of the most important subjects, in other people’s opinion. Regardless of your opinion on the subject itself, a great history teacher can lead their students to academic success. Here at Creek, we are fortunate to have one of the best History teachers this side of the Mississippi–Mr. Marshall Munson.
Mr. Munson wears a lot of hats at Creek. He teaches AP World History, Latin 1-4, and sponsors the Latin Club. During the recent Homecoming Carnival, you might have spotted him selling PopTarts or math-based Fortune Readings.
Mr. Munson’s passion for Latin began way back in 2011, at the end of his middle school career when he was choosing classes for his upcoming freshman year. He was required to pick a foreign language class and put Latin down as his third choice. Unbeknownst to him, the school did not offer either of his first two choices, so Latin was where he ended up.
Munson refers to this blunder as “the best mistake of my life.” The community of Latin teachers that he has met and worked with stretching back to his days as a student has been extremely rewarding.
As a World History teacher, Munson primarily teaches 9th and 10th grade students, and he encourages them to broaden their horizons and consider what is happening in the world around them. “World history becomes so much more impactful when you realize you are living through it,” Munson said.
Mr. Munson is right, in that history is being made all the time. 9/11 was a historical event. Covid was a historical event (that we all lived through). Even Hellen Keller (which may not have actually happened) was a “historical” event. The events happening today might be studied by future students in World History, long after Mr. Munson has retired.
When asked to describe Mr. Munson, Mrs. Moore called him “diligent, passionate, and empathetic.” That passion is felt by his students every day. Everyone loves the Munts!
